In October, Hengchun is a place of many quiet wonders.
Eagles migrating south, sunlight spilling across the coast, and the stories of people whose lives remain deeply rooted in this land.
This month, wander into Hengchun with Volando.
A trip to Hengchun doesn’t have to be about checking off every attraction.
You could spend the morning by the sea, wander into Manzhou in the afternoon, return to Volando as the sun begins to set, and end the day beneath a sky full of stars.
It’s About Finally Having The Time To Truly See A Place.
Don’t rush the journey. Feel it.
Travel isn’t always about going further.
Go back at Volando,
read a book, enjoy a glass of wine, have a thoughtfully prepared dinner,
Some flavors cannot be made in a hurry. They must be given time.
Liu Mei-Hsia chooses Niu-Yi-Zai, a traditional local radish grown in Hengchun. Through drying, fermentation, and long hours beneath the sun, each radish is left to mature slowly, guided by time.
Three years. Five years. Ten years. Sometimes, even longer.
What she preserves is more than a jar of aged radish. It is the sunlight, the wind, and the memories of a place.
A radish, slowly losing its moisture. Salt, slowly finding its way in. Sunlight, gently drying each layer. Time, quietly bringing everything to maturity.
This time, Volando Kenting welcomes Liu Mei-Hsia, bringing years of local heritage and memories to the table.
Executive Chef Chang Chia-Cheng reimagines these flavors rooted in the land of Hengchun, offering a fresh interpretation of a time-honored tradition.
Each autumn, when the northeast monsoon stirs, a quiet procession of travelers returns to Manzhou, in the southern reaches of Hengchun.
They have no rooms to reserve, no doors to return to — yet, year after year, they find their way back to these skies.
The Gray-faced Buzzards.
And October becomes a season written across the sky, belonging, for a little while, to Hengchun alone.
As Night Falls, the Sky Prepares to Dance.

From Far Away, Here I Choose to Stay.
Almost four years have passed since I moved to Hengchun, a young soul who drifted south and eventually found his way to Kenting.
Four years ago, I came to this coastal corner of Taiwan with my partner, someone willing to walk beside me wherever life might lead.
At first, I thought I was simply moving to another city. Only later did I realize that what had truly changed was the way I saw life.
I began to notice the light dancing on the sea, the wind moving through the hills, and the people who had called this place home for generations.
Some stories hide around the corners of old streets. Others live in the hands of those who practice their craft. And some only begin to reveal themselves after sitting down and sharing a conversation.
The more time I spend here, the more I fall in love with this place. And the more I come to believe that the Hengchun Peninsula deserves to be known by more people.
Not just for its beaches, sunsets, and familiar tourist spots, but for the people who live on this land, the crafts passed down through generations, the rhythms shaped by the seasons, and the quiet, unassuming moments that make everyday life here so meaningful.
That is why I want to record the stories I encounter.
Beginning with one person, one shop, one craft at a time, I hope to find my way deeper into the life of this land.
And so, I will keep wandering across the Hengchun Peninsula, meeting people, listening to their stories, and sharing the landscapes that make me pause along the way with travelers who are willing to listen.
If you wish, come along with me and Volando as we discover Hengchun anew.
Perhaps the next time you visit, you will see more than just the scenery. You may begin to see the people who call this place home, and the stories quietly unfolding behind the landscape.
